Print the date on labels and apply them in one step: a wraparound labeler with built-in inkjet

Challenge: date printing and labeling as separate steps

This site sells grain powder packed in round containers. It was using two separate processes: first printing the expiration date on the labels, then applying the printed labels to the containers.

Two processes mean more labor and more time. Moving printed labels and keeping them in order also increases the chance of mistakes.

Solution: an inkjet marking machine mounted on the wraparound labeler

PEC proposed a wraparound labeler with a cartridge-type (TIJ) inkjet head mounted on the label path. The date is printed the moment the label passes the head, and the printed label is wrapped straight onto the container.

• The date is printed as the label passes.
• A sensor detects each label so the date is printed in the correct position.
• The printed label is then wrapped around the container and applied.
• Containers come in one at a time along the conveyor and exit once labeling is done.

Result: one less process step

With printing and labeling done on one machine, operators only need to pack the finished containers into boxes. There is no need to pre-print labels, stack them and keep them in order.

PEC's cartridge-type inkjet head can print not only expiration dates but also lot numbers and QR codes, so it can be used as is for products that require traceability.
